Treating Sweating Problems

February 23, 2010

Excessive sweating is a problem more than a third of the population suffers from. This condition is basically brought about by genes, where someone from the sufferer’s family suffers from it. This condition is not only caused by genes but other contributing factors could include the menopause, overactive thyroid or antidepressant drugs.

Excessive sweating can make sufferers embarrassed and self conscious as it can cause an unpleasant smell and can leave noticeable sweat patches under the arms. Basically, sweat is not smelly. It is because it causes a breeding ground for bacteria which breaks down the sweat to form fatty acids. And it is these fatty acids that have a pungent and irritating, stale smell.

It is the hands, feet, groin, face and armpits which cause excessive sweating problems. A condition called bromhidrosis which causes sweat to be broken down by yeast and bacteria, can sometimes occur as a result of excessive sweating. Areas affected can become inflamed, red, itchy and the skin can get cracked and sore.

This is why it is important that you learn to control your sweating problems. Many people use deodorants to control sweat, thinking they are anti-perspirant. Unfortunately not all deodorants have antiperspirant ingredients and will only mask the odor. Choose anti-perspirants that have aluminum chloride in them, which closes pores to prevent sweat and thus keep you dry.

Wearing tight fitting clothing should be avoided as this can antagonize the problem. Instead, wear clothing that is loose and breathe well. Another tip is to wear clothes that are lighter as stains will be less noticeable. Wearing dark clothing will mean that sweat patches are more visible.

Drinking hot liquids should be avoided as they can cause you to sweat more. Instead, drink as much water as possible to cure your sweating problems by not only lessening your sweat, but also by cooling your body.

Follow these tips and you will soon start to stop sweating.
