World Taekwondo Federation Tae kwon do is a full contact sport where it is allowed to kick to the head (throwing punches to the head are not allowed), . During competition, full body protection is used to protect the competitors. To minimise the chances of head injuries, a fighter allowed to engage in a competition for three months if one was knockedoutt by a blow to the head. If the same incident happens again after three months, they would not beallowed to fight for half a year. Another knockoutto the head after this six month period results in a total exclusion of competitions.
International Taekwondo Federation Tae kwon do is so-called semi-contact. Fighters not allowed to attack the head with full force. All the same, it is allowed to throw punches to the head, using the so-called “killing-blow”, stopping just an inch before the target. To reduce injuries, International Taekwondo Federation use gloves at sparring-competition.

Tae kwon do is known for its dramatic flying and spinning kicks. The budding martial artist should learn the fundamentals of tae kwon do through practising choreographed sequences of combative moves , the breaking of boards or other materials, and free sparring. They also receive instruction in principles such as courtesy, integrity, perseverance, and self-control.
